Typeface from Found Type: Semester-Long Project (Fall 2016)
A semester-long project to ideate and design our own typeface from observing type and lettering from our surroundings, "found type".
"In this exercise, you will develop a custom display typeface based on letterforms you find in your surroundings. This process will follow these milestones (deadlines will be announced in class):
Phase 1: Observe and document found typography (30–50 images, including hand made signage, books, unique iron letterforms, graffiti, etc. Do not use any images downloaded from the internet)
Phase 2: Experiment with the most compelling characters found, and select one. (Continue documenting if necessary)
Phase 3: Build out a hand-drawn, full alphabet (A–Z, plus numerals, upper OR lower case) based on selected character.
Final: Redraw alphabet in Adobe Illustrator, present to class"
